Officers have not released a motive in the shooting, in which one student, 14-year-old Todd Brown, was shot in the back of the head. Another 9th grade student at Discovery was taken into custody immediately.

The Huntsville Times has confirmed the identity of the shooter, but the name is being withheld by police because he is a juvenile.

Madison Police Chief Larry Muncey said the incident appears isolated.

"My son goes to Discovery, and I have no doubt that he'll be safe at school Monday," Muncey said.

Another news conference is scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
