Nadal wins second Wimbledon title

Spanish powerhouse Rafael Nadal defeated Thomas Berdych 6-3, 7-5, 6-4 in the men’s final of the Wimbledon Championships to claim his second title at the All England Lawn Tennis Club. This was Nadal’s eight grand slam and he is now level with the legends Andre Agassi, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Fred Perry and Ken Rosewall in the pecking order of the grand slam winners. Nadal hardly broke a sweat in his straight sets triumph over the Czech 12th seed. Nadal also completed his second French Open-Wimbledon back-to-back double, considered one of the toughest feats on the men’s tour.03-Rafael_Nadal.PV___profile

Nadal was elated with the win. “It is more than a dream for me. It was always my dream to play on this court. It was amazing to play the final this time because last year I couldn’t be here. It was one of the toughest moments in my career to miss Wimbledon last year. The trophy will go in the bedroom, very close to the other one”, exulted the “King of Clay”. Nadal could not defend his title last year due to a chronic knee problem, that still persists.

Thomas Berdych was gracious in defeat and said that the previous two weeks had been memorable for him. The Czech produced the best tennis of his career to knock out Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, the first and the third seed respectively, in successive matches. But defeating Nadal proved to be too tough a task, as he was downed in 2 hours and 13 minutes.
