Sororities and fraternities are not just unions for having fun and getting wild at parties. These things have meaning to them. They have a history and vision that they are built upon and established. Take the example of Alpha Kappa Alpha. It is not a mere gathering of aspiring college or university females. If you dig up the pages of history you will come to find that Alpha Kappa Alpha is based upon a visionary objective; providing a platform for minorities (which includes women and African American females in specific) to show their strength and presence. Alpha Kappa Alpha was made to let the world know that women were not mere minorities; they existed!

Today, on the 15th of January, hundreds and thousands of women all across the globe celebrate the birthday of the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. They will pay homage and respect to Ethel Hedgeman Lyle and her eight valiant comrades who laid the foundations of this alliance a hundred and two years ago in the year 1908.

Since it was conceived, Alpha Kappa Alpha has grown in to a presence that adopts various initiatives that work for social benefit and economic improvement. Every year, the Alpha Kappa Alpha union joins hands with numerous other groups across the globe to help with programs that work to promote education, create health awareness, inform on business practices and strengthen family bonds.

The ivy leaf, which serves as the union’s mascot, is a symbolic depiction of the evergreen Alpha Kappa Alpha enjoys globally.
