Cardinals, Packers Stage Highest-Scoring NFL Playoff Game
In a thriller that was arguably one of the most exciting in postseason history, the Arizona Cardinals and Green Bay Packers battled to the highest-scoring NFL playoff game ever, with a combined 96 points. When Karlos Dansby took the game-winning touchdown into the end zone -- giving Arizona the 51-45 win -- the two teams had combined to break the previous record of 95 points, which was set back in 1995 when the Philadelphia Eagles beat the Detroit Lions by a count of 58-37.
Some of the statistics are mind-boggling.
The two quarterbacks combined to pass for 801 yards and nine touchdown passes. Of the 124 plays, exactly half went for first downs. Each team only punted one time all game. There were 13 touchdowns scored. The Cardinals averaged 9.3 yards per play while the Packers averaged 7.4. Each team ever ran the ball effectively when they tried, as the Packers averaged 4.5 yards per carry and the Cards averaged 6.8. There were three players with at least 125 receiving yards. The two teams combined for an obscene 1,024 total yards, which is especially impressive considering the Packers were second in the NFL in yards against during the regular season.
With 422 yards passing, Aaron Rodgers set a Packers' postseason record. Perhaps most impressive, though, was the fact that Kurt Warner completed 29 of his 33 passes against a defense that ranked second in the NFL in completion percentage against during the regular season.
