Yesterday, 10th November 2009, Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning stating that a cyclonic storm is intensifying in the Arabian Sea and is likely to move near south Gujarat and north Maharashtra and could bring with it strong winds to Goa, Karnataka and Kerala as well.
Today, 11th November 2009, Heavy rainfall has been reported from Indian cities of Mumbai, Goa and Konkan region. The weather deptarment in Mumbai has said that a tropical cyclone has strengthened over the Arabian Sea off the western coast. The storm is expected to hit Mumbai tomorrow around 5.30 am in the morning.
Meteorological Department have reported that a cyclone with winds strengthened to 75 kilometers per hour will hit the southern Gujarat, Northern Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa.
The Cyclone named Phyan was about 250 km west of Goa at 2.30 a.m. The cyclone is still 400 kms away from the coast of Goa but is said to be moving dangerously fast and the next 36 hours are said to pose a greater threat to the western coast. Phyan was 420 km south-southwest of Mumbai and 670 km south-southwest of Surat in south Gujarat.
In a cyclone alert, the IMD website states that the depression is “likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm and move in a northerly direction for some more time and then north-northeastwards and cross south Gujarat and north Maharashtra coast” byearly Thursday.
Heavy rainfall is predicted along the coast in affected states and fishermen have been warned not to go out to sea. “Under its influence heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places and isolated heavy rainfall at most places is likely to occurover south Gujarat from tomorrow (Wednesday).
“Squally winds having speed up to 75 kmph are likely along and off Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra coasts during the next 48 hours and over Lakshadweep area and Kerala coasts during the next 24 hours. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into sea along and off these coasts,” the IMD alert said.
